Troubleshooting

Indexed by what you notice, not by what the subsystem is called — because when something is wrong you know there's no sound, not that it's a routing problem.

10 of the 13 problems below are not faults. They are documented behaviour that looks like a fault, and they are marked working as designed. “Your unit is fine” is a useful answer and nobody publishes it.

I can't find the amp models

There are none

Working as designed

HX Effects is the effects half of the platform by design. If you wanted amp models, that is an HX Stomp.

HX Effects 3.80 Owner's Manual

My computer won't record from it

It is not an audio interface

Working as designed

USB carries editing, firmware and control messages only.

HX Effects Cheat Sheet

My pedal in the loop sounds wrong

Level mismatch between the loop and the pedal

The loops can run at instrument or line level. Set them to match what you have put in them, in Global Settings > Ins/Outs.

HX Effects 3.80 Owner's Manual

The display keeps changing to an effect I didn't select

A foot resting on a capacitive switch

Working as designed

Touching a switch selects its effect for editing without switching it. Nothing is wrong.

HX Effects Cheat Sheet

It loses power mid-set

The supply cable is not secured

There are two cable-tie hooks on the rear for exactly this. Loop the cable through one.

HX Effects Cheat Sheet

It sounds thin, fizzy or harsh through my speakers

Two settings cause nearly all of this, and neither is a tone control. Check them in this order before you touch an EQ.

The output level does not match what you plugged into

Instrument level into a mixer, or line level into the front of an amp, sounds wrong in a way that is easy to mistake for a bad amp model. One menu, thirty seconds.

HX Effects 3.80 Owner's Manual

The cab block is in the wrong state

Cab on into anything full-range; cab off into anything that ends in a real guitar speaker. A cab into a real cab is two speakers stacked, and no cab into a PA is an amp with no speaker at all.

Half my sound is missing when I use one cable

The cable is in the RIGHT jack, not LEFT/MONO

Working as designed

When you are feeding a single amp, speaker or mixer channel, connect only the LEFT/MONO jack. That jack sums the signal; the RIGHT jack carries the right side alone, so a stereo preset loses everything panned left.

It says DSP full and won't let me add a block

Line 6 chose to let you keep adding whatever you like until the DSP runs out, rather than capping you at one amp and one reverb. That is the better trade, but it means the wall arrives without warning.

Stereo blocks cost roughly double

Working as designed

A stereo version of an effect uses about twice the DSP of the mono one, and a dual cab about twice a single. Mono anything that does not need to be stereo — usually everything before the amp.

Legacy cabs cost much more than IR-based ones

Working as designed

From firmware 3.50 the IR-based Cab and IR blocks use significantly less DSP than the original Legacy Cab blocks. Swapping a Legacy cab is often the single biggest saving available.

HX Effects 3.80 Owner's Manual

There is a cheaper version of the block you want

Working as designed

Several categories include Simple blocks that do the same job for less. And instead of two Amp+Cab pairs, try one Amp into a Cab > Dual — mixing two cabs gets you a lot of the variation for a fraction of the cost.

My snapshot edits vanish when I switch snapshots and come back

Snapshot Edits is set to Discard

Working as designed

Global Settings > Preferences > Snapshot Edits decides this. Recall (the default) keeps your changes as you left them. Discard returns the snapshot to its last-saved state — which is the behaviour you want live, and the behaviour that eats your work while you are building. Hold BYPASS and press SAVE to flip it at any time; the camera icon on the Home screen is grey for Recall and red for Discard.

A snapshot I just selected sounds identical to the last one

Nothing has been changed in it yet

Working as designed

That is exactly what an unedited snapshot does — it carries the state you arrived with. It only becomes its own thing the moment you change something in it. Nothing is broken; you have simply not written it yet.

Loading a preset jumps to a snapshot I didn't choose

It recalls whichever snapshot was active when the preset was saved

Working as designed

Saving a preset stores all of its snapshots and remembers which one you were on. If a song should always start on the intro sound, select that snapshot and then save — the choice is made at save time, not at load time.

My delay or reverb cuts off the instant I bypass it

Not the same problem as tails cutting off at a preset change, and it has a different answer — this one is a setting inside the block.

That block's Trails setting is Off

Working as designed

Trails Off mutes repeats and decays the moment the block is bypassed. Trails On lets them ring out naturally, through a bypass and through a snapshot change. It is set per block, so one delay left wrong is enough to make a whole rig feel abrupt.
