What the four tone knobs really do, and how to move around a capture that’s frozen at one setting.

The short version

Choose the capture first, shape with the IR second, and treat the tone knobs as a finishing move rather than a starting point.

Work in the right order

Because a capture is fixed, dialling in on this device is a selection problem before it’s an adjustment problem. Working in the wrong order is why people spend an hour on the tone knobs and end up somewhere worse than they started.

  1. 01Pick a capture that is already close. Turn Footswitch I and audition — this is the big move.
  2. 02Choose the cabinet, then the microphone and position, in the app. This is your second-biggest tonal lever by a wide margin.
  3. 03Set the IR’s low-cut and high-cut. High-cut around 8–10 kHz removes digital fizz; low-cut around 80 Hz tightens the bottom.
  4. 04Set GAIN for how hard you’re driving the capture.
  5. 05Add a pre-slot overdrive if you need more push or a different flavour of push.
  6. 06Only now touch BASS, MID and TREBLE.

The tone stack, honestly

BASS, MID and TREBLE sit after the capture and are not modelled on the captured amp. Neural DSP publishes nothing about them — no centre frequencies, no unity positions, no Q. Owners have asked for this documentation and it hasn’t appeared.

So treat them as a generic three-band EQ you’re learning by ear, and prefer cutting to boosting. Cuts are more forgiving when you don’t know what a control is centred on.

Using overdrive as a filter, not a distortion

The most useful pre-slot trick on any modelling device applies here: put Green 808 in Pre-FX 1 with drive at zero, tone up, and level up.

You’re not adding distortion. You’re using the pedal’s mid-hump and low-end roll-off to tighten what hits the capture — more attack, less flub. This is standard practice for high gain and it works exactly as it would on a real amp.

Note that none of this was possible before NanOS 2.0.0, because there were no overdrive devices at all.

Below are concrete starting points by tone target. Read the provenance labels: only two of these are genuinely community-verified, and the rest is general amp-modelling knowledge applied to this device’s block names. That’s stated plainly on every step, because the alternative — the page currently ranking first for “Nano Cortex settings” — invents features the device doesn’t have.
